Specialization: Structural analysis and design, earthquake engineering and structural dynamics. Emphasis on experimental methods and numerical simulations under laboratory or in-situ conditions (structural health monitoring).
Research fields: Earthquake performance of existing R/C, masonry and steel structures. Retrofitting techniques with traditional and innovative materials. Field of application: R/C or masonry buildings, industrial facilities, bridges, churches, ancient temples, stone masonry bridges and other cultural heritage.
Teaching and academic activity: Over forty-five (45) years of academic activity in research, teaching and supervising undergraduate and post-graduate university students at the School of Civil Engineering of Aristotle University. Currently teaching at the post-graduate level under the following programs: 1) Sustainable Design of Engineering Structures Against Earthquakes and Other Natural Hazards programme of post-graduate studies, School of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, 2) Protection, Conservation, and Restoration of Cultural Monuments interdepartmental programme of post-graduate studies, Faculty of Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece.
Ex-Director, Laboratory of Strength of Materials and Structures (was Director for 30 years).
Served as Member of: the Greek National Advisory Board on Cultural Heritage; the Greek National Committee on Seismic Code, Seismic Risk and Protection Against Earthquakes.
Reviewer of research projects and institutions for: the Greek Ministry of Research and Technology, the Italian Ministry for Research, the European Research Council, the Cyprus Ministry of Education.
Life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Author of more than 250 technical papers.
